KAWARAU BRIDGE

Be sure you visit the 100 year old Kawarau suspension bridge.

Kawarau Bridge was the first full-time bungy jump site in the world and is the place where adventure tourism began in New Zealand. There’s something special about doing a bungy jump at ‘The 1988 Original’.

The Kawarau Bridge Bungy is situated on the main road between Queenstown and Cromwell, near the Nevis Bluff and the Gibbston Valley. The bridge platform is 43 metres above the Kawarau River and the jumper has the option of a head and shoulders splashdown in the river if he/she feels like cooling off. The other three Queenstown bungy jumps don’t offer a splashdown. Kawarau also offers tandem jumps if you would like to go into space with a friend.

Transport shuttles leave from Queenstown at 9 am, 12 noon and 3 pm, departing from The Station Building, corner of Camp and Shotover Streets. Allow 2 hours for the whole outing from Queenstown.

There is a fully licensed café on site and an extensive viewing deck close to the jump site. AJ. Hackett Bungy have plans to develop the site with a 1,000 square metre underground ‘cave’, which will include natural lighting, solar heating and a turf roof planted in thyme and golden tussock. This will ensure the structure has minimal environmental impact and blends into the natural Central Otago landscape. Facilities in the ‘cave’ will include a 15 metre high theatre with a 180° dome-shaped movie screen, a bungy museum, café, bar and shop. Spectators will enjoy close ups of funny or frantic facial expressions of the rebounding jumpers.

The world’s first full-time bungy site is the place to go for the perfect swan dive, somersault, hand touch or waist deep splashdown. It’s a user-friendly site in superb surroundings - the perfect setting for a memorable ground rush. As they say ‘Be There or be Square’.

SKIPPER’S CANYON

Check out 71 metres of wild gravity deep in the wilderness of the Shotover River Gorge.

The Queenstown Skippers Canyon Bridge Bungy is kept operational by the AJ. Hackett Company specifically for special events and corporate conferences. One popular event is a ‘Full Moon Bungy’ available for group bookings, where up to 40 people can enter into the canyon for a midnight jump.

These special events involve a 4WD Landover journey into the rugged canyon as part of this ultimate wilderness adventure. The perfect ‘Mission Impossible’ team-building scenario, guaranteed to challenge and motivate corporate staff members, private parties and social groups.

Skipper’s Canyon at the head of the Shotover River is New Zealand’s own ‘Grand Canyon’, and was an important gold mining area in the 1860’s. Hundreds of miners camped down in the gorge braving freezing winters and severe spring floods.

Access to both the Skippers and Pipeline bungy sites is by 4WD vehicles over roads that were hewn out of rock by manual labour. Include time to visit the fascinating nearby stone school house and historic Mt Aurum homestead. To complete this outstanding backcountry experience you can hire mountain bikes and ride awesome single tracks through the gorge.

Bookings for the Skipper’s Canyon bungy can be made through the Conference and Incentive Coordinator at the AJ. Hackett Company office.

THE LEDGE

If you’re after an unforgettable urban bungy experience The Ledge is legendary.

The fun factor is definitely a ten and the views of Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables are out of this world.

The Queenstown Ledge Bungy offers a number of unique choices as well. You can choose a body harness or an ankle tie, jump off either the mild or the wild side of the platform, take a running jump or a sedate swan dive, or even a reverse somersault. You get to choose the method that suits your personality, and gives you the maximum rush. The jump ticket includes a T-shirt and the price of the Skyline gondola trip. From Queenstown you can complete the bungy jump and round trip on the gondola in one hour. The Ledge platform is cantilevered out from the cliff face, 400 metres above the town, and directly below the Skyline lookout terrace.

In addition, The Ledge Bungy Sky Swing is the latest AJ. Hackett creation for thrill seekers looking for a new gravity defying experience. You are strapped into a full harness and then lowered 3 metres down the rock face. After the usual heart-stopping countdown you pull the self-release cord and free fall at a sickening pace until the cable tension sends you flying through the air in a huge arc.

Watch the jumpers on The Ledge from the Skyline observation deck for a while and enjoy their antics. You can then decide which super hero you wish to emulate on your own jump. You can run, jump, back flip, spiral or fly any which way to get the most adrenalin-pumping action. The high elevation and panoramic views over the town far below, make this a fabulous free-falling experience.

For a truly surreal sensation launch yourself off the Ledge at night and watch the lights of Queenstown spin in a multi-coloured kaleidoscope below you.
