On July 4th, I stepped on the plane and began a six week journey in an unfamiliar environment, Japan, also known as "The Land of the Rising Sun." It wasn't a vacation but more of a learning experience for me. When I first got there, I didn't know what to expect. I didn't speak a word of Japanese except for a handful of survival expressions. Six weeks later and after many hours of studying, I learned how to read, write, listen, and speak basic Japanese. I formed many friendships and bonds that I still keep in touch with. It was a truly amazing and unforgettable experience.
I was able to go to Japan through a study abroad program sponsored by University at Buffalo. I created this webpage because I wanted to share my experiences in Japan. I also hope that it will inspire other people to go to Japan and create their own experiences. I strongly encourage students to study abroad at least once even if it isn't in Japan.
Why did you choose to go to Japan? I was asked this question a few times and I didn't really know how to explain it. I feel as though Japan chose me because inside was calling me to go over there. There were many factors that could have kept me from going but in the end, Japan prevailed and I am so glad that I decided to go.
